Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FermiForward) is honored to have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science as the management-and-operating (M&O) contractor for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab).
Fermilab has a storied history as America’s premier particle physics and accelerator laboratory, working to help answer some of the most fundamental questions in science. FermiForward is excited to bring a bold vision, a strong leadership team and demonstrated operational excellence to move forward with a new era of scientific discovery at Fermilab that focuses on the most compelling questions facing science in the 21st century. Our team members have a deep history with, and appreciation for, Fermilab’s role in the U.S. scientific community, combined with long-standing connections to the high energy physics community and research institutions and best-in-class capabilities in safety, project management, business management and contractor assurance.
FermiForward is now moving forward with a ninety-day transition period that began on October 1, 2024. Going forward, we will update this website periodically with information for the community.
Science Vision
FermiForward’s science vision is to proactively advance the laboratory’s undisputed position as the premier particle and accelerator physics institution in the U.S. and rapidly broaden and deepen the three already prominent programs in quantum science, artificial intelligence, and microelectronics.
Our strategy to achieve this vision, and to position Fermilab to lead the most important next-generation particle physics campaigns, involve using advanced, emerging technologies; serving as a sought-after worldwide partner in science and technology (S&T), research and development (R&D) and construction; and hosting major international facilities in the future.
Operations Vision
FermiForward offers a fundamentally new approach to laboratory operations positioning Fermilab to achieve excellence in all areas of operations and business management. We will continue the recent successful trends in Fermilab operations, as acknowledged by DOE, and are working to implement new innovations and improvements to propel the lab to an enhanced state of excellence. Our integrated management strategy, coupled with our first-hand experience operating Fermilab and our infusion of industry-leading integrated subcontractors, allows us to deliver safe, consistent, compliant, and effective operations to support the science vision and achieve DOE’s mission.
FermiForward consists of the University of Chicago (UChicago) and Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA), with Amentum and Longenecker & Associates, Inc. as integrated subcontractors. Collectively these team members bring a history of unmatched high energy physics science and technology leadership, as well as extensive expertise and experience in operations and project management across the DOE complex.
Importantly, to enhance and enable specific areas of our science vision and amplify Fermilab’s impact, we have strong partnerships with 20 leading research universities and prominent research organizations around the world.
