FermiForward Brings Academic Coalition to Enhance Scientific Vision
Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC (FermiForward) recognizes that Fermilab’s leadership in groundbreaking science, both in the U.S. and abroad, will continue to flourish by tightly coupling the lab’s science mission to effective operations. To that end, FermiForward has established a coalition of renowned academic research institutions to help bring in the brightest talent and provide support.
This coalition consists of:
California Institute of Technology
Chicago State University
City Colleges of Chicago
Columbia University
Hampton University
Howard University
Illinois Tech
Northern Illinois University
Northwestern University
Purdue University
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology
Spelman College
University of Chicago
University of Michigan
University of Illinois Chicago
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
University of Illinois System
University of Notre Dame
University of Oxford
This coalition includes strategic, targeted partnerships and outreach to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), locally (City Colleges of Chicago, University of Illinois Chicago, and Chicago State University) and nationally (Hampton University, Spelman College, and Howard University) to reach populations that have been historically underrepresented in the physical sciences.
Through this alliance, Fermilab will recruit scientists and engineers into its programs, along with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows under the mentorship of both partners and the scientists at Fermilab. The alliance will also provide opportunities for Fermilab staff to have paid, extended (months-long) visits to the academic institution and opportunities to advise students jointly. Additionally, UChicago and FermiForward are committed to the recruitment of multiple scientists in emerging areas of opportunity for both UChicago and Fermilab, along with PhD students and postdoctoral fellows doing research at Fermilab.
We also would like to highlight that in addition to these university partners, FermiForward welcomes to its partner coalition both the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the French state research organization and the largest fundamental science agency in Europe; as well as the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. In addition to this set of partners, URA brings its membership of over 90 major research universities around the nation and globally and the Visiting Scholars Program which brings 40-50 researchers to Fermilab every year.
Get to Know a FermiForward Partner – University of Chicago
For more than 125 years, the University of Chicago has forged its own path. This has led to research that shapes new fields of study and improves life around the globe; to new schools of thought, and to transformative education. This has also laid the groundwork for monumental breakthroughs across the sciences, medicine, economics, law, business, history, culture, the arts, and humanistic inquiry.
Since 1890, the University of Chicago’s focus on rigorous inquiry has made it a model for modern institutions of higher education and research. Across numerous departments and disciplines, as well as over 150 institutes and centers, the UChicago community advances ideas and innovations that enrich human life. The University’s culture of inquiry thrives on intellectual rigor, diverse perspectives, extensive civic and research partnerships, and ever-broadening global reach.
UChicago breakthroughs transform the way we live and think. Members of our community have pioneered sociology scholarship, introduced hormonal cancer treatment, proposed the existence of black holes, discovered new dinosaur species, changed the face of economics, improved graduation rates in American cities, and the list goes on. Tracing such breakthroughs from decade to decade, UChicago scholars have made a lasting impact on our world. Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 101 scholars that were university faculty members, students or researchers at some point in their careers, including Albert Michaelson, the first American to win the Nobel in any of the sciences.
The University of Chicago’s affiliations with Fermilab as well as Argonne National Laboratory help make it one of the country’s leaders in scientific and technological innovation. It has served as a co-contractor for Fermilab since 2007. It is also part of UChicago Argonne LLC, which has been the prime contractor for Argonne since the lab’s founding in 1946.
